Laser Hair Removal Prep: 7 Days Before Your First Session

Laser hair removal prep is mostly about avoiding sun, plucking, and waxing in the weeks before. Skipping these steps is the single most common reason for poor results or skin irritation.

    4–6 weeks before

Stop waxing, plucking, threading, and epilating. The laser needs an intact hair follicle to target. Shaving is fine and actually required.

    2 weeks before

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner on the treatment area. Tanned skin significantly increases burn and pigment-change risk.

    24 hours before

Shave the treatment area cleanly the night before. Do not apply lotion, deodorant, or perfume to the area the morning of treatment.

    Day of

Arrive with clean, shaved, product-free skin. Tell your provider about any new medications — some antibiotics and retinoids increase photosensitivity.

    FAQ

Why can't I wax before laser hair removal?+

Waxing removes the hair follicle, which the laser needs to target. You can shave (which only removes hair above skin level), but not wax, pluck, or thread.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?+

Most patients need 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart, plus occasional maintenance sessions. Results vary by hair color, skin tone, and body area.
