Botox Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 24–48 Hours

Botox aftercare is simple but specific. The first 24 hours matter most: a few small habits can mean the difference between clean, even results and unnecessary bruising or product migration. Here's exactly what to do — and what to avoid — after your appointment.

    Why aftercare matters

Botox takes 3–7 days to start working and up to 14 days for full results. During the first day, the toxin is still binding to nerve endings — vigorous activity, pressure, or heat can theoretically affect how it settles. Following simple aftercare also reduces bruising and swelling at injection sites.

    The first 24 hours

Stay upright for 4 hours, avoid touching or rubbing the area, skip strenuous exercise, skip alcohol, and avoid heat (sauna, hot yoga, very hot showers). Make gentle facial expressions throughout the day — this is the one thing your provider may actually encourage.

    24–72 hours

You can resume normal exercise and most skincare. Avoid facials, microneedling, dermaplaning, and any face-down massage for at least 7 days. Sleep on your back for the first two nights if possible.

    When you'll see results

Most people notice softening at day 3–5 and final results around day 10–14. If a small area still moves at day 14, it's normal to request a free touch-up — many providers offer this within a 2-week window.

    Botox Aftercare Routine

    1. 1

      Stay upright for 4 hours

Sit or stand upright for at least 4 hours after your appointment. Don't lie flat, don't nap face-down.

    2. 2

      Don't touch the area

Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying pressure to treated areas for 24 hours, including facials and skincare tools.

    3. 3

Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours

No HIIT, weight lifting, or hot yoga for 24 hours. Light walking is fine.

    4. 4

      Avoid alcohol and blood thinners

Alcohol, fish oil, ibuprofen, and aspirin all increase bruising risk for the first 24–48 hours.

    5. 5

      Skip heat exposure

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and very hot showers for 24 hours to reduce swelling.

    6. 6

      Make natural expressions

Smile, frown, and raise your eyebrows throughout the day. This is one of the few things providers actively recommend.

When can I wash my face after Botox?+

You can gently wash your face 4 hours after treatment. Use light pressure and avoid scrubbing, exfoliating, or using cleansing devices on the treated area for 24 hours.
